ARTWORK SUMMARY

Nanak Shah Fakir, 2015

Inspired by the earliest descriptions and artistic representations (found particularly in the Sikh Janam Sakhi tradition) this artwork depicts the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, wearing the dress of both Hindu and Muslim saints symbolising the universality of his message and specific teachings on the equality of all faiths. This includes the saffron robe (colour of saintliness and self sacrifice); the Sindhi topi (cap) and the patchwork shawl. The ‘Ik Onkar’ (“One God”) motif above Guru Nanak’s head, together with his hand gesture, further represent this key teaching on Monotheism. The burst of light behind the ‘Ik Onkar’ motif (which has four points like a compass representing the four corners of the earth, or directions of North East South and West) signifies the global outreach of Guru Nanak’s teachings and the all embracing nature of the Sikh faith which is open to all regardless of caste creed, nationality, race or genre.  The surrounding details within the composition symbolise further aspects of Guru Nanak’s teachings, his character, as well as various episodes in his life as social and political reformer.

The original artwork belongs to a private collection.
