ARTWORK SUMMARY
Chintz:The Price of Luxury, 2018 (Slaves of Fashion Series)
We think of chintz as typically English, but it was first made in India. Indian craftsmen were innovative and had great expertise in dying fabric. They made superb patterned textiles. These floral fabrics had a lasting influence on British design up to the present day. In the artwork, we see Queen Catherine of Braganza wearing a chintz gown. She came to England from Portugal in 1662 to marry King Charles II. Her dowry included the city of Bombay, increasing English control over Indian trade goods. On the table next to her are status symbols of a luxury lifestyle. Conspicuous consumption of tea, coffee and sugar was one aspect of this. The British and wider European craze for chintz was another.
There was a price to be paid for these luxury goods. Enslaved labour produced these commodities. In addition, the British textile industry copied Indian design and style: one factor that led to the demise of production in India itself.
