ARTWORK SUMMARY
Indiennes:The Extended Triangle, 2018 (Slaves of Fashion Series)
In this work, The Singh Twins represent the horror of the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies. Traders sailed from Europe to West Africa. There they bought people and transported them across the Atlantic. They sold their captives into slavery in America and the West Indies. The ships returned to Europe with sugar, tea, coffee and tobacco, grown by enslaved labour. The “indiennes” of the title are cotton fabrics made in India for the French. In the 18th century merchants from the port of Nantes traded these for enslaved Africans. The Singh Twins depict the central female figure wearing these fabrics. Also seen are other goods used as currency in the slave trade, such as guns, beads and cowrie shells. At the top of the artwork we can see the badge of the India Natal shipping line. After the abolition of slavery, this company brought workers from India to sugar plantations in South Africa. Forced labour was just one of the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. These legacies live on today through prejudice and racism.
