ARTWORK SUMMARY

Cotton:Threads of Change, 2018  (Slaves of Fashion Series)

This artwork depicts the impact of colonial policies on Indian textiles. When the British took power in India, the nature of trade between the two countries changed. Until the 18th century, India produced finished cloth for home and export markets.  During the 19th century raw cotton was sent from India to Britain. It was made into cloth in Lancashire, where the mills became the textile hub of the British Empire. Cheaper mass-produced British fabric from Lancashire was sold back to people in India. Indian weavers could not compete and this destroyed their trade.  Meanwhile, British factory workers also experienced exploitation and hardship. In the 20th century Mahatma Gandhi inspired the struggle for Indian independence. Self-sufficiency was a pillar of the independence movement and Gandhi is shown here wearing Indian homespun cloth.
