ARTWORK SUMMARY
Musiln_The Fabric of Revolt, 2018 (Slaves of Fashion Series)
Muslin is a fine, cotton fabric with many uses. From early times, India traded this material throughout the world. People marvelled at its beauty, comparing its lightness and transparency to air and water. In the 18th century, the East India companies exported it to Europe, where muslin dresses were all the rage.
The woman in the artwork wears a muslin dress in early 19th-century style. She pours water (representing muslin) from a jewelled Indian beaker into a glass bearing the initials of the East India Company. This symbolises the transfer of India’s great riches to Britain through trade in muslin.
At the top of the artwork, a mule representing a new English spinning machine tramples on the Indian tiger. The British flooded the market with cheap, machine-made fabrics. This destroyed the Indian textile industry, which was based on craft skills.
